Key considerations and lessons learned from developing new credentialing programs

I.C.E. Exchange Program Description: This session will describe the steps taken to develop and implement a new certification program with insight from both the certification board and the test development/delivery provider. The Board of Certification for Emergency Nurses (BCEN) along with PSI Services has recently and successfully developed the first certification exam for burn nurses, the Certified Burn Registered Nurse (CBRN). The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) has recently developed the first Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification examination. The PMHNP certification examination is an entry-level competency-based examination that tests clinical knowledge of psychiatric mental health across the life span. Eligibility includes graduation from an accredited Master’s, Post-Master’s Certificate, or Doctoral nursing program within the population area along with active RN licensure.

Session presenters will discuss the exam development lifecycle from feasibility to beta-testing from both a test sponsor and a psychometric perspective. Presenters will also discuss lessons learned along the journey. This session aims to provide participants with key considerations to guide decision making in developing a new certification exam for their own organization.
